Increase in U.S. LNG Exports to Europe Within First Four Months of 2022

Bar chart showing monthly u.s. liquefied natural gas exports by region from january 2020 to april 2022, with asia, europe, latin america, and the rest of the world as categories.

Throughout the first four months of 2022, the United States has exported 74% of its liquefied natural gas supply to Europe. Last year, the annual average the U.S. exported to Europe was 34%. In 2020 and 2021, Asia has been the primary destination for LNG exported from the U.S.

Since December 2021, Europe has been importing record high numbers of LNG because of their low inventory of natural gas. High prices for natural gas incentivized Europe to attain natural gas globally rather than locally.

Despite the increase in natural gas exports to Europe, natural gas exports from the U.S. to Asia have decreased by 51% during the first four months of 2022.
